BACKGROUND AND STRUCTURE OF GRIDCo
Ghana Grid Company Limited (GRIDCo) was incorporated on December 15, 2006 as a Private Limited Liability Company and granted certificate to commence business on December 18, 2006 after the successful separation of transmission functions from Volta River Authority (VRA). This was in compliance with the Volta River Development (Amendment) Act, 2005 Act 692, and the Energy Commission Act, 1997, Act 541 which provide for the separation of the transmission functions of the VRA from its other activities and the operation of a Transmission Utility. The Company became operational on August 1, 2008.
OWNERSHIP AND GOVERNANCE STRUCTURE
GRIDCo is wholly-owned by the Government of Ghana and is governed by a nine-member Board of Directors. The Chief Executive is supported by a twelve (12) member Management Team, who head the various departments. The departments are; Technical Services, Southern Network Services, Northern Network Services, Engineering Projects, Engineering Planning and Design, System Operations, Human Resource and Services, Finance, Legal Services and Board Secretariat, Corporate Affairs, Internal Audit and GRIDTel.
MANDATE AND FUNCTIONS
GRIDCo is mandated to undertake the following functions:
- Carry out the business of economic dispatch and transmission of electricity from facilities of wholesale suppliers to bulk customers or distribution companies and utilities in Ghana and West Africa without discrimination;
- Acquire by purchase or otherwise construct, establish, manage, maintain and otherwise deal with all transmission facilities, works, buildings and other systems necessary to transmit electric energy;
- Undertake metering and billing of all power transfers in the National Interconnected Transmission System (NITS);
- Carry out any general commercial activities related to the safe and reliable operation of the transmission system and the economic dispatch of electric energy;
- Carry out general commercial telecommunication services using its transmission assets.
The goal of GRIDCo is to provide a robust, secure and reliable electricity grid to support livelihoods and economic development in Ghana. GRIDCo is also committed to playing a lead role in the regional and sub-regional electricity grid interconnection through the West African Power Pool (WAPP) initiative.
VISION, MISSION & GOAL
The vision of the Company is “To be the model electricity grid Company”. GRIDCo has the mission to “Provide a reliable electricity grid for development”, with a medium term goal “To achieve 99.99% reliability on the National Interconnected Transmission System with fully automated and integrated business processes by year 2019”.
