The President of the Republic, John Mahama, the Minister for Energy and Green Transition, Dr. John Jinapor, and the Executive Secretary for the Public Utilities Regulatory Commission, (PURC), Dr. Shafic Suleman, have commended the joint GRIDCo-VRA Engineering Teams for their efforts at restoring the generating units at the Akosombo Generating Station into service.
Full restoration of all six (6No.) generation units was achieved at 10:18 p.m. on Thursday 30th April 2026, providing the 1,000 MW of generation capacity for transmission to improve power supply.
During the President’s familiarisation visit of the switchyard on Thursday 30th April 2026, he extended congratulatory messages to the team of indefatigable patriotic citizens.
From Friday 24th April, 2026, a joint GRIDCo-VRA Team, with the support of colleagues, worked around the clock to restore all the generating units to service. The restoration process progressed steadily over the period.
Below is the chronology of restoration works:
- Sunday 26th April: The first generating unit was restored.
- Monday 27th April: The second generating unit was restored.
- Tuesday 28th April: The third generating unit was synchronised onto the grid.
- Wednesday 29th April: The fourth generating unit was brought on stream.
- Thursday, 30 April: The restoration exercise was completed, with the fifth and sixth generating units brought fully online.
The Ag. Chief Executive, Ing. Frank Otchere indicated that, “I take this opportunity to thank everyone, for the impressive esprit de corps, as well as your efforts and contribution to muscle through the restoration of the Akosombo switchyard. Though it is not over yet, our efforts have so far, demonstrated the strong can-do spirit of GRIDCo. For this, I sincerely commend all of you for your dedication. Importantly, I urge us to sustain this momentum beyond Akosombo, applying the same level of excellence across every area and department we find ourselves. Ayekoo to all!!”
