The Ghana-Burkina Interconnection Technical Sub-Committee (TSC) comprising the Ghana Grid Company LTD. (GRIDCo), Volta River Authority (VRA) and the power Company of Burkina Faso, Société Nationale d’Électricité du Burkina Faso (SONABEL) held a 2026 meeting in Tema, Ghana from 29th June to 3rd July.
The meeting, which was hosted by GRIDCo was jointly chaired by Ing. Stephen Debrah, Manager, System Control Centre, (GRIDCo) and Ing. Ousseni CONGO, Director, Energy Movement (Transmission), SONABEL. Ing. CONGO led the SONABEL Team whilst Mr. Isaac Kojo Arthur, Principal Electrical Engineer, led the VRA Team.
The meeting analysed challenges relating to the interconnection between Ghana and Burkina and made recommendations for resolving them. Further, there were discussions on the information on both Systems and Energy Exchanges.
The meeting reviewed upgrade works, expansion and Transmission System reinforcement projects in the Ouagadougou Network. Outages recorded in 2025 on the Ghana-Burkina tie-line were also discussed. The VRA team delivered a presentation on the generation projects the it plans to undertake to improve power supply to SONABEL. The need for the installation of Auto Transformers and Static Var Compensators (SVC) to improve stability on the Interconnected Power Systems was extensively deliberated on.
Other issues the meeting highlighted were Energy Forecast on the Interconnection, Harmonisation of the Maintenance Programmes of both Countries and the Performance and Operation of some critical stations in Burkina Faso.
Ing. Stephen Debrah impressed upon the SONABEL team on how important it is to always inform their Ghanaian partners of projects, upgrades or any system related works for the right studies and assessments to be carried out. “This is very important in ensuring partnership and better collaboration”, Ing. Debrah said. He added that doing so will also ensure seamless operations between the two Countries.
Ing. Stephen Debrah, closed the meeting on behalf of the Management of GRIDCo and VRA, expressing gratitude to the SONABEL delegation for honouring the invitation to attend the TSC meeting and for the fruitful deliberations at the meeting. He expressed Ghana’s commitment, emphasising that all the recommendations made at the meeting will be implemented to improve on the reliability of power supply.
