Beyond the restoration works, a series of parallel activities have gathered pace since the fire incident. These include, a national fire audit, which is underway; the procurement of equipment for reinstallation; the setting up of an interim control room; inspection of new cables for installation and efforts to restore communication equipment lost in the fire among other things.
On 25th June, 2026, a six-member team from the Ghana National Fire Service, led by DO1 Michael Ato Korsah, visited the Akosombo substation as part of a comprehensive national fire audit of all GRIDCo’s critical substations and other assets. This visit to Akosombo is important because of the measures management has established to prevent the recurrence of fire. They reviewed the proposed areas, where fire suppression and detection systems are planned for.
In a related development, a pre-tender meeting was held on 2nd July, 2026 for the construction of the Akosombo Switchyard Fire Hydrant System. This Fire Hydrant System is intended to provide accessible source of water to extinguish fires in the event of an emergency. GRIDCo’s Directors for Procurement, Ing. Nicholina Yembilah; Technical Services, Ing. Vincent Boachie; Southern Network, Ing. Francis Arthur as well as the Akosombo Area Manager, Ing. Job Kwame Aziaku; Materials Management Manager, Richard Koranchie and Fireman, Martin Ananga, were a part of the meeting. An inspection of the switchyard was also carried out to enable the tender to know the layout at the yard.
