It has been ten (10) weeks since the 23rd April 2026 fire incident ravaged the GRIDCo Akosombo Control Room, reducing its 161kV Switchyard to ashes. Since then, significant efforts through the Akosombo Power Restoration Works have been ongoing. A temporary transmission connection was established within a week to reconnect the Akosombo Generating Station and sustain power transmission.
As part of ongoing oversight and support for the restoration project, the Chief Executive, Ing. Frank Otchere, together with some members of the Management team, inspected the facility on Friday 10th July 2026 to assess progress. The project team has since established a temporary control room to house critical equipment, including protection panels, relays, and associated control systems.
During the visit, the team reviewed the arrangement and installation of panels and protection equipment within the makeshift control room and received updates on the integration of essential systems designed to ensure the continued safe and reliable operation of the switchyard. Attention was paid to the installation of fire suppression systems, which form a critical part of the facility’s safety infrastructure.
The inspection also covered landscaping and environmental improvement works around the temporary facility to ensure a safe, orderly, and conducive working environment for operational staff.
The visit provided an opportunity for Management to engage with the project team, commend the progress made so far, and reaffirm Board and Management’s commitment to restoring critical infrastructure and strengthening operational resilience, following the April 2026 fire incident.
Work on the temporary control room is progressing steadily, and marks an important milestone in efforts to maintain the reliability and continuity of power system operations while longer-term restoration plans are pursued.
