The first 2025 bi-annual Technical Sub-committee (TSC) meeting has been held. The meeting took place in Tema from the 9th to the 13th of June, 2025, between Ghana Grid Company LTD. (GRIDCo), the Volta River Authority (VRA), and Société Nationale d’Électricité du Burkina Faso (SONABEL).

The engagement formed part of the ongoing collaboration on the Ghana–Burkina interconnection, aimed at addressing technical and operational challenges while enhancing power exchange efficiency and advancing regional energy integration.

Head of the SONABEL team, Mr. Ousséni Congo, praised GRIDCo for the rapid commissioning of a 250 MVA phase-shifting transformer at Nayagnia, emphasing the importance of completing the second transformer to ensure system reliability and increased import capacity for Burkina Faso and inspections, transmission surveillance and vegetation management, etc.

Notably, the meeting highlighted several power system upgrade projects, currently being

undertaken in both countries. In the Ghana power system, the Ameri Power Plant will be relocated to Anwomaso, adding 250 MW by October 2025 to support power supply to Burkina Faso. Additionally, AKSA (350 MW) and CENIT (330 MW) thermal plants are under construction at Anwomaso to boost capacity and enhance exports.

GRIDCo provided updates about the upgrading the 161kV Anwomaso–Kumasi (AW1K) Line, planned installation of a 50 MVAr SVC at Nayagnia to improve voltage stability as well as installation of two new 250 MVA phase-shifting transformers at Nayagnia to help manage reverse power and voltage regulation.

On its part, SONABEL informed the meeting of upgrade projects in the Burkina Faso power system such as the construction of a 225kV and 330kV transmission line; three new substations, and the replacement of aging transformers at key sites such as Zagtouli and Kossodo. Additionally, it is continuing its solar power integration projects.

GRIDCo and SONBEL confirmed that the hands-on two-week exchange programme involving, Dispatch personnel, which commenced in January 2024, at GRIDCo’s System Control Centre (SCC), must be continued in 2025 and beyond.

As part of the meeting, the committee visited the Sunon Asogli Power Plant and GRIDCo’s

System Control Centre, where they observed key operational and generation processes supporting the interconnection.

The next GRIDCo-SONABEL Sub-Committee meeting will be held in Burkina Faso later in the year.
