As part of its stakeholder engagement drive, ahead of the 8th edition of the Ghana Energy Awards (GEA), the Secretariat paid a courtesy call on Ing. Mark Baah, Ag. Chief Executive of the Ghana Grid Company (GRIDCo). The visit reflects the Awards’ commitment to deepening collaboration with key industry players and recognising excellence in Ghana’s energy sector.
Welcoming the delegation, Ing. Baah provided an overview of GRIDCo’s current operations, emphasising its role as the Electricity Transmission Utility (ETU) and Market System Operator, as defined in the Grid Code and relevant legislative instruments. He highlighted the challenges and opportunities in the transmission landscape, calling for innovative financing solutions and increased private sector participation—especially to unlock regional revenue opportunities within the subregion.
Speaking on behalf of the GEA Awards Panel, former Chairman Dr. Kwame Ampofo recounted the Awards’ growth since inception. The current Secretariat CEO, Ing. Henry Teinor outlined their decade-long tradition of visiting stakeholders and reiterated GRIDCo’s pivotal place in Ghana’s energy value chain. “We value this aspect of our engagements. GRIDCo is not new to the Awards, and we consider you a natural ally,” he noted.
Ing. Teinor emphasised GEA’s independence and credibility, stressing the rotation of chairpersons and consultative theme selection process guided by input from stakeholders and the Ministry of Energy. “The Ministry may support, but it is not a judge and jury—we safeguard fairness,” he added.
On her part, Dr. Jemima Nunoo further encouraged GRIDCo’s active participation in the nomination process and urged that nominations, particularly for women in engineering and the energy sector should be pushed through. She added that, as an industry leader, GRIDCo’s support should reflect its status.
Looking ahead, the Secretariat revealed plans to expand GEA’s footprints into the ECOWAS region, deepen industry engagement, and increase oversight on the green energy transition. Ing. Teinow suggested that while GRIDCo may not be a renewable energy institution, it has the power – literally and figuratively – to move Ghana’s renewable energy transformation.
The Ghana Energy Awards Secretariat took the opportunity to congratulate Ing. Baah on his appointment as Ag. CE. The visit reaffirmed the mutual commitment between GEA and GRIDCo to honour excellence, inspire innovation, and foster investor confidence in Ghana’s dynamic energy sector.
