A delegation representing SONABEL – the National Electricity Company of Burkina Faso – led by its Director General, Ouedraogo Souleymane, engaged in discussions with GRIDCo’s Management regarding power exports to Burkina. This meeting, which took place on September 22, 2023, also provided an opportunity for SONABEL to express its gratitude to GRIDCo for facilitating the timely completion of work on the Nayagnia Transformer. The project, which commenced in September 2022 was successfully energized a year later in September 2023.
During these discussions, SONABEL expressed its need for increased power supply from Ghana and explored possibilities for collaboration on projects aimed at enhancing transmission and power distribution in Burkina. During their visit, SONABEL’s delegation held meetings with the Volta River Authority (VRA) and Energy Commission.
SONABEL plays a vital role as a significant Bulk Customer of GRIDCo, receiving 150 MW of power from Ghana through the Nayagnia Substation in the Upper East Region. This power is further transmitted to the connection point at Zatoulie in Burkina Faso.
