A cross section of the Board and Management of the Ghana Grid Company LTD. (GRIDCo) have begun a nationwide tour of its Operational Areas, starting with the Kumasi Area under the Northern Network Department (NND). The visit forms part of efforts to familiarise the new Board with GRIDCo’s operations and interact directly with staff.

Welcoming the delegation, the Kumasi Area Manager, Ing. Peter Acquah, expressed appreciation, describing the visit as “An honour and a historic moment.”

Speaking on behalf of the Acting Chief Executive, Ing. Mark Baah, the Acting Deputy Chief Executive [Ag. DCE] in charge of Engineering & Operations, Ing. Frank Otchere conveyed his regards, commending staff for their dedication. He noted that, the Board and Management Team had recently concluded a strategic retreat, and the ongoing field visits form part of the leadership’s commitment to gain deeper insight into operations across all GRIDCo Operational Areas, with Kumasi being its first stop.

Ing. Otchere took the opportunity to commend the technical team for their swift restoration efforts, following the collapse of transmission lines in the Anwomaso forest area and another incident in Obuasi. “Management recognises your hard work, that is why this year’s Safety Durbar will be held here in Kumasi,” he announced to enthusiastic applause. Again, he congratulated the Team for winning the 2025 Inter-departmental Safety Quiz.

The Board Chairperson, Mrs. Kuukua Maurice Ankrah, led the team in observing a minute’s silence for the late Selina Antwi, a dedicated member of the Kumasi team who recently passed away. She commended the Area team for rallying together to pay their last respect to their late colleague.

Reflecting on her earlier service rendered as a GRIDCo Board Member from 2009 to 2013, Mrs. Maurice Ankrah said, “This is a homecoming for me. The Company has grown remarkably, with expanded infrastructure, a stronger network system, and dedicated staff ensuring reliable power supply to Ghana and beyond.”

In a major announcement, the Board Chairperson revealed the Board’s directive to regularise the employment of about ninety (90) technical staff who have served on contract for over a year. “Our mandate is that by December, all of them should be remunerated as GRIDCo staff. We started as a Board in August, and we focus to ensure a significant inclusion for all. This Board’s focus is on people, because it is people who work on the machines, and they must be given full recognition,” she emphasised.

The Director, NND, Ing. Bernard Gyan applauded the decision and encouraged casual workers to remain committed. “To me, you are auditioning for the job, please take it seriously and give your utmost best,” he said.

The visiting team toured key operational sites, including the Kumasi Substation (K13), where Ing. Acquah explained that most engineering works in the Area are carried out by GRIDCo’s in-house engineers. The substation, he noted, serves as the Master Station for the Kumasi network, requiring constant technical supervision.

Briefing continued at GRIDCo’s evolving System Control infrastructure, where Ing. Otchere and Ing. Hussaini Adams highlighted the Company’s strategy to operationalise to complement the main SCC in Tema.

The tour concluded with a visit to the Anwomaso AKSA and CENIT project sites, where GRIDCo is constructing new 330kV switchyards to enhance power evacuation and strengthen supply reliability in the Ashanti Region. The AKSA and CENIT generation plants are designed to provide additional generation capacity and operational flexibility to the National Grid, especially during peak demand periods. The integration of these facilities will further reinforce the stability of the transmission network within the middle belt.

Present during the tour were Board Chairperson Mrs. Kuukua Maurice Ankrah, Board members, His Majesty Odeneho Kwafo Akoto III, Hon. Solomon Kuyon, Mr. Kwasi Kyei Frimpong, Mr. Muhammed Bashiru Nii Narh Alema and the Board Secretary, Mrs. Ama Haywood-Dadzie. The Management Team was led by Ag. DCE, Ing. Frank Otchere, supported by Director, Engineering, Ing. Nicholina Yembilah; Director, Land Management, Ing. Bismark Anane; Director, Human Resources, Mr. Isaac Mumuni and Director, Office of the Chief Executive, Mr. Joseph Zumasigee.
