With great enthusiasm and a strong sense of solidarity, members of the GRIDCo Senior Staff Association (SSA) and Divisional Union gathered at the Independence Square, alongside other worker groups to observe the 2024 May Day Celebrations. The Union’s presence highlighted their commitment to emphasising the role of workers in Ghana.
This year’s celebration was themed: “The Role of Workers and Social Partners in Securing Peaceful Election for National Development.” In his address, President Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo assured Ghanaians that the upcoming December 2024 election would be peaceful and efforts would be made to ensure it is free and fair.
The President commended the support received from organised labor, workers, and professionals in Ghana, acknowledging their dedication and commitment to driving the Ghanaian economy forward. He emphasized that workers are the backbone of the country’s development, stating, “That is why we celebrate you on May Day.”
President Akufo-Addo also addressed the recent erratic power supply, expressing optimism about a resolution. He thanked Ghanaians for their patience and cooperation during this challenging period.
Representing organised labor, Dr. Yaw Baah, Secretary General of the Trade Union Congress (TUC), called on the government to address the power challenge due to its negative impact on businesses. He also mentioned concerns about the cost of living, inflation, and forex volatility affecting Ghanaian workers, stating, “Comrades, we have a lot of work to do to protect the working people of Ghana.”
During the event, workers’ groups displayed placards expressing their commitment to upholding ethical labor practices and ensuring a positive work environment. The placards also highlighted workers’ concerns and grievances to the government.
May Day, also known as ‘International Workers Day,’ holds significant historical and cultural importance worldwide, commemorating the achievements and struggles of the labor movement. It serves as a reminder of the collective efforts to advocate for workers’ rights, fair labor practices, and social justice.
GRIDCo’s continued participation in May Day reflects its recognition of the invaluable contribution of its workforce, its commitment to employees, and its broader community in embracing solidarity and collective action.
