In collaboration with Gamey & Gamey Group [a consultant, specialised in HR, ADR & Labour Relations], the Human Resource Department recently organised a two-day intensive training programme for national and local Executive Officers of both the Senior Staff Association, the Union, as well as a cross section of HR Officers, at the Hillview Guest Centre, Abokobi, Accra.
The purpose of the training programme was to equip participants with practical tools to support meaningful engagements and reduce disruption staff-management relationships.
Pivoted on Ghana’s Labour Law, the session touched on various subsets of the subject, including the right preparations to make before going into negotiations.
Mr. Austin Akufo Gamey, CEO of Gamey & Gamey delivered the core presentation and guided participants through key elements of Ghana’s Labour Law; Work ethics; the PULSE theory (Prepare, Uncover, Learn, Search and Explain) to enhance productivity; The role of effective communication and integrity in Union-Management relations; Disciplinary procedures; Strategies that facilitate conflict resolution; Appreciative negotiation of a Condition of Service / Agreement
Significantly, he noted that “Ghana’s Labour Law applies directly, not through interpretation. He urged both Management and staff Leadership Groups to adopt this mindset to reduce unnecessary tension and confrontational engagements. He emphasised that even when tension arises good negotiation skills and temperate communication should prevent conflict. Above all, he called on both Leadership and Management to build trust.
Mr. Glover Kennedy Barney, Ag. Manager, Performance, Learning and Organisational Development facilitated the training programme. Sharing his thoughts after the programme, he opined that, “This training will facilitate a warm working environment borne from a cordial Staff-Management relationship. It will also bring common understanding between both parties and enable the new leadership to learn and understand the labour management concept.”
Sharing their opinions, other voices from the training grounds indicated that;
“This training will enhance the capacity of staff leadership and foster good relationships among us. It will lead to increase in productivity and create industrial harmony. This training is truly aimed at creating a strong bond between staff group leadership, staff and Management.”
Ing. Wisdom Kojo Adenyo, Assistant Chief Technician Engineer, Northern Network Services & Chairman of the Senior Staff Association.
