Colleagues of the Telecom Network Operations Section [within the Southern Network Department (SND)] gathered on Thursday, 1st August in Akosombo to celebrate and honour Mr. Frederick Nii Adjah Asare on his retirement after 30 years of service to VRA/GRIDCo.

Mr. Asare, a dedicated driver joined the Volta River Authority (VRA) in 1994 and after the decoupling of the transmission business, joined GRIDCo, serving for 15 years.

The Akosombo Area Maintenance Supervisor, Mr. Kodjo Adjaley, delivered a warm welcome address. In his speech explaining the purpose of the gathering, Mr. David Ahumah Obubuafo, an Assistant Chief Technician, affectionately described Mr. Adjah Asare as the “youngest old man” he had ever met, highlighting his youthful spirit and energy. Ing. Abdulsalam Azindow, Manager Southern Telecom Network Operations remarked that the occasion was more than a send-off party, “It was a celebration of a remarkable individual”, he said.

Numerous heartfelt stories were shared by staff who had worked closely with him, describing Mr. Asare as a respectful, calm, and engaging colleague. Others referenced his attention to the technical aspects of the job. A notable story recounted how Mr. Asare saved his teammates from potential electrocution and a fire outbreak during a routine maintenance at the 161kV Aboadze substation, showcasing his vigilance and dedication.

Mr. Asare expressed his gratitude to God and thanked colleagues for gathering in his honour. On his commitment to work, he stated that his drive and zeal for work stemmed from hardships experienced in his childhood. He fondly recalled his time at GRIDCo, appreciating the travels across Ghana and the friendship among workers who have become like family. Mr. Asare urged all staff to continue the good work, love their jobs, and uphold the esteemed name of GRIDCo.

Staff of the Southern Telecom Network Operations presented Mr. Asare with a citation from the Department and a cash gift. Other welfare groups also presented gifts to him.

Mr. Asare steps into retirement, leaving behind a legacy of dedication, hard work, and the profound respect of those who were privilege to work with him. The event was a heartfelt tribute to a man who has left an indelible mark on his colleagues and GRIDCo.

Some staff from the Head Office in Tema were present, including many who had worked with Mr. Asare over the years. Everyone had a wonderful time, with joyous dancing and plenty to eat and drink.
