The Accra Area of GRIDCo played host to a five-man delegation, who are from West Japan Engineering Consultants Inc. (West JEC) – the firm responsible for the design and supervision of construction of the Accra Central Substation BSP – for a working visit.
The engineering team from West JEC, who was in town for project meetings with Northern Electricity Distribution Company Limited (NEDCo), deemed it expedient to visit the substation to gain first-hand information on the state of affairs of the facility, since its operationalisation.
Ings. Francis Arthur, Manager, Project Management Section, Engineering Department; Benjamin Ahunu, Accra Area Manager, and Cyril King, Accra Area Operating Supervisor welcomed the team on arrival, after which the team was conducted around the substation.
Mr, Kenji Sakemura, Senior Electrical Engineer & Acting General Manager, of Overseas Group, stated, “I am generally impressed by the facility’s set-up and maintenance regime for optimal operations, noted.
Ing. Ahunu mentioned that the operationalisation of the substation has brought significant benefits to the grid in Accra. He indicated there is now improved supply reliability and operational flexibility within the Central Business District (CBD) of Accra, as well as reduced overload conditions within the network.
“We are grateful for the team’s support so far, and we look forward to more support,” said Ing. Arthur.
The Accra Central substation, commissioned in December 2018, was constructed with support from the Government of Japan through the Japan International Cooperation Agency (JICA).
The operationalisation of the substation has improved power supply reliability to the CBD of Accra and the North Industrial Area, with stable voltage levels and minimal transmission and distribution losses.
