The Director of System Operations (DSO), Ing. Hussaini Adams, recently hosted a delegation from Zijin Golden Ridge Mine – the new owners of the Newmont Akyem Mine – at GRIDCo’s System Control Centre (SCC) in Tema.

This visit formed part of Zijin’s quarterly stakeholder engagements and also served as a strategic familiarisation tour to deepen their understanding of GRIDCo’s operations.

Mr. Collins Adu-Poku, Process Plant Manager for Zijin noted, “This initiative aims to enhance our appreciation of GRIDCo’s role in ensuring a stable power supply, further strengthen collaboration, and align our operational strategies accordingly. As a major industrial consumer, we see this as a critical step toward deepening our partnership.”

Welcoming the team on behalf of the Acting Chief Executive, [Ing. Mark Baah], the DSO expressed appreciation for the visit and reassured them of GRIDCo’s commitment to delivering excellence. “As the National Transmission Asset Owner and System Operator, we value our customers. You are at the heart of our operations, and we endeavour to meet and exceed expectations,” he said.

Underlining GRIDCo’s track record, the DSO stated, “We pride ourselves in our 99.99% Power Supply Reliability. Our operations are growth-driven, and we are always prepared to meet the needs of our Customers.”

In response to inquiries about potential tariff adjustments and the 2026 outlook, the DSO explained that while tariff increases are necessary, they are crucial for sustaining the GRIDCo business and maintaining high-quality service. “GRIDCo is a capital-intensive Company which requires regular maintenance to keep the system robust,” he noted. He added that GRIDCo engages regularly with regulatory bodies, such as the Public Utilities Regulatory Commission (PURC) and the Energy Commission (EC), emphasising that, “PURC protects the interests of both Customers and GRIDCo, while we at GRIDCo are committed to protecting the interests of our Customers.”

The DSO also took the opportunity to introduce the work of GRID Consult, particularly its training Unit, which trains and certifies technical staff of Independent Power Producers (IPPs), a requirement for operations in the field.

The visit included a guided tour of the SCC, led by Ing. Stephen Debrah, Manager, SCC, who provided an in-depth presentation on Ghana’s Power Generation Mix and how electricity is transmitted through the National Interconnected Transmission System (NITS). He explained how System Operations are managed during peak and off-peak periods, stressing that, “Due to the critical nature of our equipment, there is a significant level of automation and protection embedded in the NITS to ensure system reliability and efficiency.”
