GRIDCo recently hosted a 24-member delegation from the Association of Power Utilities of Africa (APUA/ANCEE), Malawi’s Electricity Generation Company (EGENCO), and the Volta River Authority (VRA). The visit formed part of a practical training programme organised by the VRA Academy in partnership with APUA/ANCEE, aimed at promoting knowledge sharing and strengthening regional ties within Africa’s Power Sector.

The group, comprising ten (10) participants from Malawi and fourteen (14) participants from VRA, visited the System Control Centre (SCC) to see first-hand, how Ghana maintains a stable and reliable National Grid.

Ing. Stephen Debrah, Manager of the SCC, led the session and explained the centre’s vital role in managing Ghana’s Electricity Transmission Network. He walked the team through how real-time monitoring, fault detection, and advanced systems such as SCADA, work together to keep the lights on across the country. The discussion also explored everyday challenges such as voltage control, balancing supply and demand, and managing power exports to neighbouring countries.

The session blended technical insights with real-world experiences, sparking discussions and the sharing of best practices that participants found highly valuable.

To conclude, the group engaged Ing. Debrah in a lively question-and-answer segment. Participants asked practical questions about grid reliability, integrating renewable energy, and contingency planning for system disturbances. Ing. Debrah provided detailed responses, offering insights that encouraged further discussions.

The visit ended on a high note, with participants expressing appreciation for the knowledge gained and GRIDCo’s openness in sharing its operational experience. Beyond the technical learning, the visit reinforced the importance of collaboration and knowledge exchange in building a stronger, more resilient power sector for Africa.
