On Thursday 23rd April, 2026, a fire incident occurred at the GRIDCo Akosombo Switchyard, which affected power supply. Following the incident GRIDCo and VRA formed a joint technical team to agree on a restoration plan to bring the Akosombo Generation Units back on stream to supply reliable power.
Following the incident, the Minister for Energy and Green Transition, Dr. Hon. John Jinapor, together with officials from the Ministry undertook an emergency site visit to assess the extent of damage caused by the fire.
The Minister, Dr. Jinapor also met with officials, such as Board Chairlady of GRIDCo, Kuukua Maurice Ankrah, a GRIDCo Board member, His Majesty Odeneho Kwafo Akoto III, the Chief Executives of GRIDCo and VRA, Management and some staff.
In a presentation, Director for Technical Services, Ing. Vincent Boachie explained that a joint GRIDCo-VRA technical team had already agreed on the strategy to restore power to affected areas. Following the presentation, Hon Jinapor indicated that due to the unusual nature of the fire incident, there is the need for an investigation. He also urged the joint GRIDCo-VRA technical team to expedite work to restore power in the shortest possible time. GRIDCo’s Chief Executive, Ing. Mark Baah reassured the Minister saying, “We will work around the clock, the GRIDCo-VRA teams will work in shifts so, be assured that we will work hard to ensure that we compress time.”
As of Sunday 26th April, 2026, the Joint GRIDCo and VRA Technical Team restored one unit of the Akosombo Generating Station by connecting directly to the Volta Substation. The Akosombo Township and its environs have since had power, and the team has been commended for working through the rain to ensure supply. Meanwhile, the team continues to work assiduously to fully restore transmission from all the five (5) units at the Akosombo generating station within the week.
