Also present were the Minister for Energy and Green Transition, Dr. Hon. John Jinapor, accompanied by Officials of the Ministry of Energy; the Eastern Regional Minister, Hon. Rita Akosua Adjei Awatey; the Executive Secretary of the PURC, Dr. Shafic Suleman; members of the investigative committee, led by Ing. The Ag. CE, Ing. Frank Otchere led the President on a tour of the affected sections of the Control Room, providing a detailed account of how staff identified the fire and the immediate actions taken to contain it. Importantly, he highlighted the coordinated efforts to fight the blaze, which was brought under control with the help of the Ghana National Fire Service and VRA’s fire tenders.

The Minister for Energy and Green Transition, Dr. Hon. Jinapor also briefed the President on the restoration efforts, noting that the joint team of GRIDCo-VRA engineering teams had worked round the clock under tough conditions to adopt an innovative engineering solution to restore the Akosombo generating units into service. Refreshingly, the Energy Minister further added that, “This country can rely on its technical people, because our Ghanaian engineers have surmounted what others thought was impossible.”

After his tour of the area, President John Mahama commended the joint GRIDCo-VRA engineering team involved in this major work, mentioning that, “We profoundly appreciate your sacrifice. This is an act of God! Who would have expected that this control room would succumb to this kind of fire. Of course, it has been here since 1964, so they say in adversity is opportunity so now that this adversity has happened, it gives us the opportunity to replace it with a more modern control room to serve the Akosombo plant; making it work to serve generations yet unborn.”
