Staff of the Ghana Grid Company LTD. (GRIDCo) joined thousands of workers across the country to commemorate the 2026 May Day Celebration, held in Koforidua in the Eastern Region regardless of the challenging period triggered by the Akosombo Switchyard fire outbreak, where GRIDCo Engineers were working round the clock to restore power fully.

The National Event, which brought together Organised Labour, Public and Private Sector Institutions, and Government representatives, served as a platform to recognise the contributions of Ghanaian workers to national development, while reflecting on the evolving dynamics of work and economic growth.

A cross-section of staff of the Company, comprising technical and non-technical staff, including the National Service Personnel, participated in the parade alongside other institutions. Clad in company-branded apparels, the GRIDCo contingent demonstrated unity and pride, displaying their collective role in ensuring the stability and reliability of Ghana’s Electricity Transmission Network.

The celebration was marked by a series of activities, including a ceremonial march past, and addresses from key national figures. At the centre of the event was the address by the President of the Republic H.E John Dramani Mahama, who delivered on the theme: “Pivoting to Growth, Jobs and, Sustainable Livelihoods Beyond Macroeconomic Stability.”

The President’s address highlighted the importance of strengthening the workforce as a critical driver of sustainable development, while emphasising the need for job creation, productivity, and long-term economic resilience.

Key points from his speech regarding the power sector included:

● Restoration of the Control Room at the Akosombo Switchyard – President Mahama highlighted that, following the recent fire at control room of GRIDCo’s Akosombo Switchyard, a GRIDCo-VRA team of Engineers successfully restored all six (6) turbines at the Akosombo Hydroelectric Dam to full operation.

● Addressing Power Sector Debt – He noted that his administration is working to clear a substantial legacy debt in the power sector.

● Reversing Inefficiencies – He reported a jump in ECG’s revenue collection, following improvements in revenue collection mechanisms.

● 24-Hour Economy Initiative – The President stated that his 24-hour economy policy, designed to support industries operating multiple shifts, is a flagship initiative of his growth strategy, aimed at reducing power costs and providing stable electricity.

● Infrastructure Investment – He signalled a shift from over-reliance on oil/gas, to solar and other sustainable sources, while announcing new initiatives to ensure power stability.

His address focused on resolving the challenges to ensure “The lights stay on” and that the power sector does not remain a “drag on Ghana’s economy.”

Goodwill messages were also delivered by representatives of Organised Labour and other key stakeholders. Among these, the contributions reinforced the central role of workers in national progress, and called for continued collaboration between Government, Industry, and Labour to address emerging challenges within the workforce.

For GRIDCo, participation in the May Day celebration reflects its commitment not only to operational excellence, but also to national engagement. As the Backbone of Ghana’s Power Transmission System, the Company plays a critical role in enabling economic activity and supporting livelihoods across the country.

The event provided an opportunity for staff to engage beyond their operational environments and to be recognised as part of the broader national workforce contributing to Ghana’s development.

This 2026 May Day celebration concluded with a renewed sense of purpose among participants, endorsing the value of dedication, professionalism, and collective effort in driving Ghana forward.

Ayekoo to all GRIDCo Staff!!!
