Officials from the Ghana Grid Company LTD. (GRIDCo), led by Director, Northern Network Department (NND), Ing. Bernard Gyan, welcomed the Monitoring Team from the Ministry of Energy and Green Transition on Thursday, June 11, 2026, to the Anwomaso Substation. The delegation, led by Ing. Sulemana Abubakari, Director, Power from the Ministry, conducted a critical site visit on the Ahodwo to Anwomaso (K1-K2) Transmission Line Upgrade Project.

In a meeting prior to the site visit, Ing. Abubakari highlighted that recent trips experienced in the power supply chain, particularly along the Anwomaso–Kintampo 330 kV lines. He explained that these disturbances had destabilising effects on generating plants. Ing. Gyan, Director NND explained that the trips have been largely caused by transient factors, such as, vegetation contact rather than equipment failure. “To address this, GRIDCo has deployed [teams] to clear the right-of-way along many transmission line corridors,” Ing. Gyan said. He further added that the Company is performing systematic thermographic scanning of substations to identify and fix “hotspots” before they can cause failures.

Addressing the Monitoring Team’s concern for an event-free World Cup tournament viewing for Ghanaians, Director NND indicated that “For the duration of the World Cup, GRIDCo is positioning standby teams for rapid response and had deferred planned outages to prioritise a stable power supply.”

In a comprehensive briefing on the Kumasi 1st Bulk Supply Point (K1BSP) – Kumasi 2nd Bulk Supply Point K2BSP (K1BSP-K2BSP) Transmission Line Project, Ing. Martin Kaih Kasanga of the Project Implementation Unit (PIU) the presented the status of the project highlighting technical and seasonal challenges being faced by the Contractor, China Water.

He reported that, to date, 54 out of 60 tower excavations have been completed, while 51 foundations have been fully cast. He further noted that, ground assembly of towers is also advancing, with approximately 40 out of the 60 towers ready.

However, the path to completion has been complicated by:

● Foundation Redesigns: Initial excavations revealed filled material rather than the expected solid soil, requiring costly and time-consuming redesigns.

● Contractor Readiness: When a critical outage became available in March 2026 following the completion of the J2K bypass, the contractor, China Water, had not yet mobilized the necessary stringing and reconductoring equipment.

● Weather and System Stability: The onset of the rainy season has made the system less stable, leading GRIDCo to hold off on major outages until after the World Cup.

Despite the setbacks and challenges, the GRIDCo Team assured the delegation from the Ministry of Energy and Green Transition that, GRIDCo remains committed to ensuring that the Project is completed according to the agreed schedule. The working visit ended with an inspection of the ongoing works.

The visiting Team went to the Anwomaso Thermal Power Station (ATPS), AKSA, CENIT and all generators within the Anwomaso Power Enclave.

The K1-K2 Transmission Line Upgrade Project involves the decommissioning and reconstruction of the K1–K2 line section and associated substation works. Awarded in August 2024 to the contractor China Water. The project became effective in December 2024 with a formal commencement on January 1, 2025. It is financed through a grant from the Agence Française de Développement (AFD). Originally scheduled for completion by January 1, 2026, the project has undergone extensions, due to geotechnical challenges and network constraints, with the current focus on balancing construction needs with national grid stability.
