The Minister for Energy and Green Transition, Hon. Dr. John Jinapor, has paid a working visit to the Akosombo Switchyard to assess progress on the construction of the temporary control room structure.
The visit formed part of the Minister’s efforts to monitor progress of ongoing restoration and recovery works to ensure the timely restoration of critical operations at the switchyard.
The Minister, accompanied by his technical team was received by the Chief Executive, Ing. Frank Otchere together with members of GRIDCo Management. The Chief Executive of the Volta River Authority Ing. Edward Ekow Obeng-Kenzo, and his team were also present.
During the visit, the Minister and his delegation toured the affected area and received firsthand updates on the progress of work. In a technical briefing, Ing. Otchere used printed layout diagrams of the temporary control room to explain the scope of work, the status of construction, and the planned configuration of the completed facility. He outlined key components of the temporary control room, including the installation of control panels, cable systems, roofing works, and access points. He further assured the Minister that efforts were being made to restore operations safely and within schedule.
Ing. Otchere also briefed the Minister on GRIDCo’s plan to install a dedicated fire hydrant system at the facility. Mr. Augustine Kumi, Principal Fire Officer and Ag. Safety Mana ger, was invited to explain the design and purpose of the system. Mr Kumi noted that the hydrant system would serve both the temporary control room and the planned permanent structure, thereby strengthening fire safety preparedness at the switchyard.
The Minister and his technical team later held discussions with GRIDCo Management on the ongoing works at the Akosombo Switchyard, as well as other critical projects within the National Interconnected Transmission System.
Hon. Dr John Jinapor commended GRIDCo staff for their hard work, commitment, and dedication to duty since the fire incident. He encouraged them to sustain the momentum and continue working diligently towards the full restoration of operations.
After the Minister’s visit, Mr Augustine Kumi led the Acting Deputy Chief Executive for Engineering and Operations, Ing. Abdul Samed Ibrahim, together with other Management staff and managers present, to inspect ongoing works on the fire hydrant system.
