A group of hundred (100) students from the Tema Mission Technical Institute, comprising first to third-year students, embarked on an educational tour at GRIDCo’s Volta Substation at the Tema Head Office. The tour aimed to provide students with a practical understanding of the power transmission system in Ghana, complementing their theoretical knowledge. They were briefed on essential safety measures and restrictions to be observed at the substation, and eachone was presented with safety apparel for the tour.

Mr. Jerry Ahadzi, Assistant Chief Technician Engineer (ACTE) for the Volta Substation, Mr. Stephen Odonkor, Maintenance Mechanic and Mr. Collins Addo, Operating Attendant, took turns to share invaluable insights into the complexities of power distribution and the crucial role of substations in maintaining grid stability at the Volta Substation, and Smelter II. Also, the students learned about the operational challenges GRIDCo faces and strategies implemented to mitigate power outages

These visits are allowed, to provide students with a broad perspective on the National Interconnected Transmission System (NITS) operations, and the critical role of GRIDCo Engineers in ensuring a stable and reliable power supply.

After the tour, third year students, Francis Nyameke and Memuna Adam shared their experiences as follows:

“I’ve learnt so much today about the types of transformers, factors that affect it, types of relays, circuit breakers and the types of cables used for the transmission of power.” Francis Nyameke

“We once visited the ECG training school, and I’m glad we came here today. I’ve learnt so much. First, we learnt about the voltage levels used in GRIDCo, and about the factors that affect transformers: the weather, cooling oil and the load. We also learnt about the lightning arrestor used to protect transformers from lightning strikes”. Memuna Adam
